At The Time Is YA Network, we know that leadership doesn’t always wear a title or a suit. Sometimes, it looks like a young college student dancing folklórico to honor her culture, a future veterinarian empowering the next generation of Latinx professionals, or a first-generation graduate turning her life story into inspiration for others.
Today, we celebrate three remarkable individuals who are transforming lives through action, courage, and purpose.
Gabriela S. Rodríguez – Advocate for Culture and Education

Gabriela is a second-year psychology student at Napa Valley College, aspiring to transfer to UC Berkeley. As a proud first-generation college student and daughter of Mexican heritage, she honors her roots through ballet folklórico dancing and creative writing. From winning oratory competitions to sharing her story as a "no sabo kid" in poetry, Gabriela is using her voice to inspire others to embrace their identity and chase their dreams. Despite the challenges of growing up in a low-income household, her determination to build a brighter future never wavers.
Bryan Puentes – Future Veterinarian and Latinx Advocate

Bryan Puentes is a third-year veterinary student at UC Davis and a proud first-generation student of Colombian roots. Raised in San Jose, CA, Bryan earned his bachelor’s degree in Animal Science at UC Davis in 2018. Now, he focuses on small animal medicine, with a particular passion for ophthalmology. As co-president of the Latinx Veterinary Medical Association UC Davis Chapter, Bryan is committed to creating pathways for Latinx students in higher education, ensuring they not only dream — but achieve.
Karla Valdez – Educator and Role Model

Karla Valdez immigrated to the U.S. at the age of 10, inspired by her family's determination and perseverance. After graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Spanish from Sacramento State University in 2022 and completing her teaching credential at CSU East Bay in 2024, Karla is now a Spanish teacher pursuing a Master's degree in Educational Technology. As a proud first-generation graduate and mother of four, her story is one of resilience, dedication, and unwavering belief in the power of education.
Leadership Begins with Courage
These stories remind us that leadership isn’t reserved for those in power — it begins with the courage to act, to serve, and to uplift others. It lives in classrooms, clinics, stages, and every corner of our community where someone dares to create change.
